In The Future Past

I look out over distant oceans
Seeing sand castles on a hill
And there is not boat waiting
But I am standing here still

Children’s laughter sprinkled memories
She tossed her hair
As she ran down the stair
Nobody was sayin’ life is fair

Smoke leaves traces of life once lived
Smells and soot fill the pages
Moist and soiled on the ground
And futures past are read by sages

I am grateful for my poetry
