This evening I enjoyed dinner with my wife, my daughter, my mother, my mother in-law, my brother in-law and his two children and my wife’s uncle who is visiting us from Houston Texas. It was a simple dinner with all of us just sitting around my mother in-laws bedroom with our plates in our laps; but for the first time in about a week my mother in-law was feeling better. She said that it was because she had her family around her. During our dinner one of my wife’s cousins from Ohio called to talk with her aunt, my mother in-law; again family coming together. Today my brother, from another mother and father, okay he is a very good friend who I have know for a very long time, came by to help me finish the remodeling of one of our bathrooms.
Family coming together really is a wonderful thing. I have always enjoyed the holidays; it is a time when family and friends get together and enjoy one another’s company. As a child growing up, I always looked forward to going to my grandparents house, hanging out with my cousins and eating wonderful food prepared by my grandmother and aunts. It was always a great time, even when the older cousins were teasing me and my younger cousins. It was just always great to be around the family.
One of my favorite movies of all time is The Godfather. It is the quintessential “family” movie; family in this movie has several different meanings. The thing that I really love about the movie is the way the family comes together, taking care of each other; from Sonny to Michael and especially Vito, the matriarch of the family. Everything that they do is for the family, both the immediate as well as the business family.
Another one of my favorite movies is Big Wednesday, a movie about three friends who grow up during the Vietnam War; again they are like family.
When my wife and were dating, I told her that if my family ever needed me or my help, that I would drop everything and go to their aid. I also made it very clear that there were several friends that fall into the family category, so if they were to call on me I would be there for them as well.
It is all about the family!
