I believe that hard work is rewarded. It may not happen right away, but it does eventually get rewarded. I am grateful that I had a father who instilled in me a very good work ethic. I remember when I was a teenager, I had been out partying, all night long. I came home early in the morning, 8 a.m., and was barely in bed, when my father came into my room and told me to get up, that I had chores to do. I told him that I hadn’t had any sleep and to let me sleep at least two hours; his comment to me: “I didn’t tell you to go out all night long, but you did tell me that you would weed the hill today. So get up and go weed the hill.” He was right! It was my choice to be out all night and I had made him a promise to weed the hill. It was a hard lesson, but one that I am trying to teach my children as well. Maybe not as severe as that, but to have a great work ethic. So far I think that it is working.
This past year, I have been working on branching out on finding ways to supplement my income. In the beginning, there was no financial gain; but as I continue to work and lay the bricks down in this road that I am choosing to travel on…somebody is paying my toll for me. This is allowing me to get a glimpse of the surrounding landscape and to enjoy some new opportunities as they present themselves to me. Someday the bricks that I am laying will be paid for by someone other than me; and to steal from my brother, I will be driving a new car soon as well, that will be paid for by someone else. It is the reward for my hard work.
For all of this…. I am grateful.
