Sometimes I sit here with the computer in my lap thinking for probably far too long on a title to start out the newest update. There is a space for me to enter a title, but sometimes a title just feels inappropriate. That is the case tonight…..

So far, while here in this hospital experience, the Respiratory Therapists who come in the room to take care of Cole are small females or females at least. Well just as I sat here pondering a title, a large man with a long braided ponytail, in scrubs and a white coat, paused at Cole’s door and then entered. For a second, I thought I was watching some thriller/espionage movie and this guy was disguised as a doctor but was here to take Cole out (and I don’t mean carry him away!). Thankfully he introduced himself immediately and let us know what he was doing. He said he is here to administer a breathing treatment. Now Cole is lying there with a mask on and smoke filtering out of it…I am still suspicious! hahaha Oh dear, I am getting loopy!!!

Ok, down to business:
A difficult and good day. The difficult part of the day occurred if Cole became over stimulated. He would tail spin into a delusional fit and become violent, loud, obnoxious, and mean. Don’t worry, we don’t hold it against him but it isn’t healthy for him as it sends his blood pressure soaring and his heart rate up too high. Thus, we need to keep the stimulus low within his room, i.e. in and out traffic as well as in-room activity; both of which are a constant here in ICU, so we shall see how tomorrow goes. I will be happy when Cole moves beyond this point, as it is difficult for us to witness and he ends up back in restraints as a result, which lowers his spirits. But, as Grandma Ella says, “this too shall pass.”

The good part of the day were the forward markers toward increased healing. Cole can now close his eyes fully. He can feel his cheek. He has an increase in tongue movement. All of these little steps are indications that nerves 6 & 7 are continuing to heal. The doctor of neurology came by this evening and was very positive regarding his belief in Cole’s full recovery. The word on the street is PATIENCE.

Cole’s spirits are a bit low right now. I’m sure he hates the helplessness aspect of this process. Pain he can manage, but not having full capacity of his functions is wearing on him. Lets pray together for Cole:

Lord G-d of the most high, thank you for keeping your watchful eye upon Cole. Thank you that you are Jehovah jireh, the Lord who sees. We continue to lift Cole up to you. We entrust his soul, his spirit, and his mind to your care. These areas that only you can protect, we pray you will fill with peace. Allow Cole rest in his psyche and send your angels to surround him with your loving encouragement. Please, Lord, bestow upon us patience and help us to not falter along our way.

Psalm 103:

Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.
